Resistance Breakout

Breakouts of significant resistances often produce the most explosive moves. Low win rate but very high R/R — just one trade out of three hitting target is enough to be overall profitable.

[ MARKET LOGIC ]

When an important resistance is tested multiple times and then broken with force and volume, traders who had short positions get liquidated (short squeeze), traders who were waiting for the breakout enter, and buyers from below add positions. This creates a 'wall of buyers' that pushes price violently upward.

PROS
Very high R/R: post-breakout trends can last weeks/months
Well-defined technical entry with clear rules
Breakouts of key levels attract significant institutional volume
CONS
Relatively low win rate: many false breakouts
Requires rigorous level selection — not every breakout is worth it
Psychologically difficult: buying at highs goes against instinct

What are the setup conditions for Resistance Breakout?

1
Identify a key resistance tested at least 2-3 times (more is better)
2
Price approaches the resistance again — consolidation phase
3
Breakout candle: closes ABOVE the resistance with a large body and high volume (1.5-2x average)
4
The breakout should not be preceded by an overly extended accumulation zone (reduced efficiency)
5
Optional confirmation: wait for the re-test of the broken resistance (now support) for a better R/R entry

Which filters improve the quality of the signal?

Breakout volume must be above the 20-day average — without volume it's often a false breakout
The breakout is more reliable if it occurs after a consolidation (triangle, flag, range)
Avoid breakouts at session open or during news: frequent false moves
Higher timeframe must be bullish or neutral, not in a structural downtrend
