Calisto Tanzi's Empire
Parmalat was founded by Calisto Tanzi in 1961 in Parma. It grew to become the largest UHT milk producer in the world, with operations in 30 countries and 36,000 employees.
The forged letter
On December 19, 2003, Bank of America communicated that the letter certifying 3.9 billion euros in the Bonlat account (a Parmalat subsidiary in the Cayman Islands) was fake. Shares plummeted by 90%. On December 27, 2003, Calisto Tanzi was arrested.
