TRIX

Triple Exponential Average

TRIX, developed by Jack Hutson in the early 1980s, applies a triple EMA to closing prices and then calculates the percentage change (rate of change) of this triple-smoothed value.

[ HOW TO READ THE CHART ]
Green Zone: TRIX cross above 0 → Confirmed medium-long term bullish bias
Red Zone: TRIX cross below 0 → Confirmed medium-long term bearish bias
Main Line: TRIX cross above Signal Line → More precise entry timing
Confluence: Combine TRIX with MACD for maximum probability
[ WHAT TO WATCH ON THE CHART ]
Observe how TRIX behaves relative to key price points. Note moments when the indicator reaches extreme levels and how price reacts. Look for divergence patterns between the indicator and price movement.
[ FORMULA ]
TRIX = ROC(1) of [EMA(EMA(EMA(Close, N)))]
Triple exponential smoothing, then 1-period percentage rate of change

What signals does TRIX generate?

TRIX cross above 0 → Confirmed medium-long term bullish bias
TRIX cross below 0 → Confirmed medium-long term bearish bias
TRIX cross above Signal Line → More precise entry timing
TRIX/price divergence on Daily → High-reliability reversal signal

What is TRIX and how does it work?

TRIX, developed by Jack Hutson in the early 1980s, applies a triple EMA to closing prices and then calculates the percentage change (rate of change) of this triple-smoothed value. The result is a momentum oscillator extremely filtered from short-term noise, oscillating around zero. Thanks to the triple smoothing, TRIX completely ignores insignificant fluctuations and shows only genuinely significant momentum cycles, making it ideal for identifying medium-long term trend changes without the noise typical of RSI or Stochastic.

How do you use TRIX in trading?

TRIX is used in three ways: 1) ZERO LINE CROSS: The main signal. TRIX crossing zero upward = long-term momentum has turned positive, bullish bias. Downward = bearish bias. Thanks to the triple smoothing, these crosses are much less noisy than a MACD cross. 2) SIGNAL LINE: Many platforms add a 9-period EMA of TRIX as a signal line. The TRIX/Signal cross is a more precise timing signal than the simple zero cross. 3) DIVERGENCES: TRIX/price divergences on Daily/Weekly are among the most reliable of all precisely because of the strong noise filter applied by the triple smoothing — when they manifest, the signal has high probability of success. Practical tips: use TRIX on high timeframes (4H, Daily) where its notable lag is counterbalanced by signal reliability. On low timeframes the lag makes it almost unusable.

What are the strengths of TRIX?

Extremely noise-filtered
Excellent for identifying medium-long term trends
Very reliable divergences

What are the limitations of TRIX?

Strongly lagging
Unsuitable for low timeframes
Less known than MACD/RSI
