Moving Average Convergence Divergence

The MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence), developed by Gerald Appel in the late 1970s, is one of the most popular and widely used trend-following/momentum indicators in the world.

[ HOW TO READ THE CHART ]
Green Histogram: Positive and growing momentum: the bullish trend is strengthening
Red Histogram: Negative or declining momentum: the trend is weakening or bearish
MACD Line (Blue): Difference between EMA 12 and EMA 26. Crosses the Signal Line to generate signals
Signal Line (Orange): 9-period EMA of the MACD Line. The cross with MACD is the main trading signal
[ WHAT TO WATCH ON THE CHART ]
Observe the MACD window at the bottom of the chart. The histogram is the key: when bars grow (get taller), momentum is accelerating. When they start shrinking while still positive, the rally is losing strength — this often anticipates the cross of the two lines. The blue MACD line crosses the orange Signal line: above = bullish, below = bearish. Note when both lines are below the zero line — every bullish cross in this zone is much more powerful.
[ FORMULA ]
MACD Line = EMA(12) - EMA(26)
Signal Line = EMA(9) of MACD Line
Histogram = MACD Line - Signal Line

What signals does MACD generate?

MACD cross above Signal BELOW zero → High-probability long signal
MACD cross below Signal ABOVE zero → High-probability short signal
MACD cross above zero line → Confirmed bullish trend change
MACD cross below zero line → Confirmed bearish trend change
Growing histogram → Accelerating momentum (anticipates the cross)
Histogram starts shrinking (still positive) → Warning: rally strength diminishing
Bearish MACD/price divergence → Possible significant reversal
Bullish MACD/price divergence → Possible significant reversal

What is MACD and how does it work?

The MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence), developed by Gerald Appel in the late 1970s, is one of the most popular and widely used trend-following/momentum indicators in the world. It consists of three elements: the MACD Line (difference between EMA 12 and EMA 26), the Signal Line (9-period EMA of the MACD Line) and the Histogram (difference between MACD and Signal). The histogram is the key: it grows when momentum accelerates in the trend direction, shrinks when it decelerates. The MACD is fundamentally a tool that visually simplifies what two moving averages are doing, but in a much more readable way than visually comparing the two EMAs on the chart.

How do you use MACD in trading?

MACD has four main uses: 1) MACD/SIGNAL LINE CROSS: The classic signal. When the MACD Line crosses the Signal Line upward → long signal (stronger if below the zero line). When it crosses downward → short signal (stronger if above the zero line). This signal is lagging by nature — it doesn't anticipate, it confirms. 2) ZERO LINE CROSS: When the MACD Line crosses zero upward, average momentum has turned positive: EMA 12 has overtaken EMA 26. It's a slower but much more reliable trend change signal than the Signal cross. Used on Daily/Weekly timeframes as a trend filter. 3) HISTOGRAM — the true leading signal: The histogram reaches its peak/trough BEFORE price changes direction. When the histogram starts shrinking while still positive, the rally's strength is diminishing: it's an early warning. Histogram divergences are among the most powerful signals in technical analysis. 4) DIVERGENCES: As with RSI, MACD/price divergences are high-reliability reversal signals. A bearish divergence (price makes new high, MACD doesn't) on Daily is a serious warning signal. Histogram divergences are even earlier than MACD line divergences. Practical tips: the default (12,26,9) works well on Daily and 4H. For scalping, use smaller values (5,13,3). MACD is NOT an overbought/oversold indicator — it has no fixed range. Avoid trading solely on Signal crosses in sideways markets: it generates many false signals.

What are the strengths of MACD?

Combines trend and momentum in one indicator
Visually clear histogram
Excellent for divergences
Zero line cross = powerful trend filter

What are the limitations of MACD?

Strongly lagging by nature
Many false signals in sideways markets
Does not indicate overbought/oversold
Non-normalized values: not comparable across assets
