Sumerian cuneiform tablets document loans at 20-33% annual rates. The Code of Hammurabi of 1754 BC already regulates usury. Finance is 4,000 years old.

The temple as the first bank

In ancient Mesopotamia, the temples of Ur and Babylon were the first financial institutions in history. They stored grain and silver, granted loans to farmers and merchants, and recorded everything on cuneiform clay tablets that have survived intact.

The Code of Hammurabi and rates

The Code of Hammurabi (1754 BC) set maximum rates: 33% annual for grain loans, 20% for silver loans. Anyone exceeding these limits forfeited the loan. It was the first financial regulation in history.

Contracts included: the amount lent, the rate, the maturity, witnesses, and penalties for default. A structure remarkably similar to modern contracts.

Why it matters for the modern trader

The understanding of credit and interest rates is as old as civilization. Every time the Fed raises rates, it repeats a mechanism invented 4,000 years ago on a plain between the Tigris and Euphrates.

  1. Interest rates are the price of time: the concept has remained unchanged for 4 millennia.
  2. Written documentation creates trust: from clay tablets to digital contracts, the principle is the same.
  3. Regulation is born with credit: rate abuse has always generated rules.
