Ray Dalio and the All Weather Portfolio: the strategy to survive any market

How the founder of Bridgewater built a portfolio designed to work in every economic environment

Ray Dalio developed the 'All Weather Portfolio' concept after realizing that no one can consistently predict the macroeconomic future. The portfolio is optimized for survival, not maximization.

Dalio's vision

Ray Dalio built Bridgewater Associates — the world's largest hedge fund with about $150 billion in assets — on a fundamental principle: no one can consistently predict the future. So the portfolio must be designed to work well in different economic environments, not bet on a specific scenario.

The four economic seasons

Dalio identifies four possible economic environments:

  1. Growth above expectations (good for stocks, commodities)
  2. Growth below expectations (good for bonds)
  3. Inflation above expectations (good for gold, TIPS, commodities)
  4. Inflation below expectations (good for stocks, nominal bonds)

Each environment favors different asset classes. The All Weather has balanced exposure to all.

The composition

The "retail" version of All Weather is approximately: 30% stocks, 40% long-term Treasuries, 15% medium-term Treasuries, 7.5% gold, 7.5% commodities. All with risk parity — each asset contributes equally to portfolio risk.

Lessons

  1. True diversification is for economic environments, not just asset classes: different stocks all move together in certain scenarios.
  2. Optimizing for survival is often wiser than optimizing for maximum return.
  3. Risk parity is counterintuitive: it invests more in "safe" assets with leverage rather than in stocks without leverage.
